When did you join GetYourGuide and how has your career progressed since then?

I started at GetYourGuide in November 2012 as a Destination Manager after finding the job on craigslist (not dodgy at all).  At the time I was straight out of university at the ripe age of 22 and had returned back to Berlin after falling in love with the city the year before while on my University exchange.  To say the first months were terrifying for me would be an understatement, but slowly and surely I got on my feet and learned the ropes of the sales world. As a Destination Manager, I built relationships with tour and activity providers, onboarded them to our platform, and provided insights on how they could reach and delight more customers. From 2012 - 2013 I managed Asia and Africa; however, after attending World Travel Market, an international travel trade show, in London at the end of 2013 and falling in love with the Dutch, I pushed to become the Destination Manager for Amsterdam, and I did. Our Dutch partners and I got along like a house on fire and I continued to manage them from late 2013 until the end of 2015. During this time I pushed for and was promoted to Senior Destination Manager and my confidence as a saleswoman grew.

Once again, I was terrified (I seem to notice a trend here),  but at the same time, this was one of the best, most risky, most challenging and most rewarding things I have done in my life so far.

I then felt the need to return back to my hometown and was given the chance to start the Sydney office from scratch and begin building the empire of ANZ that is today. My title then changed to Regional Manager ANZ, which came with a lot more responsibility. Once again, I was terrified (I seem to notice a trend here),  but at the same time, this was one of the best, most risky, most challenging, and most rewarding things I have done in my life so far. Since then, I have become a manager (always a dream of mine) and now have a great team of 3 who are smashing goals and doing their best every day.

What advice could give others to progress in GetYourGuide or elsewhere?

‘Leap and the net will appear’

I found this quote a couple of years ago and feel this really sums up how you can grow fast within GetYourGuide or any company for that matter.  For me, it means just go for it even if you don’t know how to do it or even if you don’t feel ready. This is where the magic happens. Put your hand up for the project that you are interested in and then learn how to do the project once you get it. Push for extra responsibilities you’re scared of taking on because you will grow into that space, and then some.  Ask the dumb questions. Be vulnerable and open about your shortcomings and how you want to grow and ask for the help you need to get you there. Don’t hold back based on where you currently sit in terms of skill set; instead, push for where you want to be.

Be super hungry to seek out feedback and embrace it wholeheartedly.

In your 1 on 1s or reviews, really listen to the feedback and see how you can immediately begin to infuse this into your life. Growth feedback is a gift you can use to propel yourself forward, but only if you truly embrace it.

Growth feedback is a gift you can use to propel yourself forward, but only if you truly embrace it.

Seek feedback from the external market e.g listen to your partners' needs or concerns, listen to what is happening around you with your competitors because this can also give you clues on how to excel your own growth.

Don’t sit still - get out there, start seeking, get the energy brewing, and your momentum will be fierce.

Be super hungry to learn.

If you are interested in a topic, don’t sit and wait for your manager to come and hand you a book or organise a training for you. Why not start now? Find podcasts, books, read articles- proactively work on your own learning and skills for your own pleasure and growth.  This will also be so much more empowering and motivating when you see the effects of your own efforts reap the seeds of success in your work and personal life.

Look at others in the organization and how they do things. Reach out to them, gain inspiration from them and try to replicate in your own work. You have so much power in your own hands to grow.
