Are you considering living abroad but a bit nervous to make the big move? In this instalment of our Relocation Guide, we spoke to Product Manager - Partnerships Joshua who gave us a first-hand account of what it's really like moving abroad for work!

Where were you living before you arrived in Berlin?

I was living in Montreal, QC, Canada.

What sparked your interest in GetYourGuide?

Reading through the blog, and watching the different videos, I was struck by how dynamic GetYourGuide seemed. It looked like a great and welcoming place where people love what they do on a daily basis. And of course, I also love to travel, so that was definitely a big plus!

What were your biggest concerns when it came to relocating to Berlin?

My biggest concern was definitely figuring out the logistics of leaving things behind. For example, how would I be able to sell my car or take care of taxes from the previous year? Do I continue to pay for my driver's license or close my bank accounts? Basically, would I have enough time after I've started working to take trips back home to work out these details?

How did GetYourGuide help you with your move?

Besides being flexible enough to let me travel home every couple of months to take care of all of the remaining details, GetYourGuide helped me look after everything once I arrived in Berlin. The HR team gave me advice on how to find a new apartment, helped me to apply for and obtain my Blue Card, explained to me how to go about opening a Bank account, and even read my mail initially (as it was all in German!)

What is the biggest difference between your hometown and Berlin?

Definitely the weather in winter. Even though Berlin is certainly not warm in winter, it beats -30C in February.

What has been the biggest adjustment for you?

It might sound strange, but the fact that all supermarkets are closed on Sundays really threw me for a loop. I spent my first few Sundays here eating out for all 3 meals of the day!

What do you most like about living here?

I love the lifestyle and how active everyone is here, especially during summer. There are always people having a great time on the streets, on terraces, at restaurants and in parks.

What advice would you have for someone who is interested in GetYourGuide but is hesitant to relocate to Berlin?

Sometimes the fear of the unknown is a good thing and can lead you to grow as a person. Stepping out of your comfort zone is the best way to learn something new, and just think, what's the worst that could happen?

Huge thanks again to Joshua for providing a detailed account into what it’s like relocating to Berlin from abroad. Keep an eye on the blog as we will be speaking to more employees about their experience of moving abroad for work!
